While it was all but a definite the past week, former Auburn football QB Joey Gatewood has officially announced his transfer to the UCF Knights from the University of Kentucky football program.

Gatewood, a former Tiger who infamously lost the QB battle to Bo Nix in 2019, will now be reuniting with the very coach who chose Nix over him, Gus Malzahn.

The Class of 2018 signal-caller, who initially committed to the Auburn football program in 2015, is now making his way to his third team in five years. UCF will be the first non-SEC program he will play for.

Gatewood’s announcement inspired some of his teammates to take to social media to congratulate him:

Boise State TE Riley Smith, a fellow Class of 2018 prospect from Bartram Trail, shouted out the matchup between his Broncos and Gatewood’s Knights:

Interestingly enough, Smith was actually a quarterback at Bartram Trail, so he actually backed up Gatewood during their time in northeastern Florida.

Despite being removed from the program for two years, Auburn football fans also wished Gatewood luck in his next move, despite it being with a budding rival whose fanbase has no loss of love for AU:

Gatewood is a long-shot to unseat incumbent starting UCF QB and NFL hopeful Dillon Gabriel, but that won’t stop Fly War Eagle from wishing the young man luck in his UCF career.
