With just two days before the beginning of the 2021 Auburn football season, and for much of the rest of the nation too I suppose, the talk of the sport is still surrounding the topic of conference realignment.

It’s hard not to think about it with the early portion of the college football season offering a window into the world of fresh matchups via non-conference affairs. While some games are between two schools that are likely to never play in the same conference (like Akron-Auburn football), other contests are offering interesting hypotheticals.

Such as: why don’t Georgia and Clemson play every year? With the two teams taking part in the Chic-Fil-A Kickoff in Atlanta at beautiful Mercedes Benz Stadium (on the inside!), the two fanbases could be treated to a classic between two-top ranked teams separated by just one state line.

Elsewhere, Fresno State could have Bulldogs fans yearning for a step up in weight class if they can hang with fellow Pacific Rim program Oregon. Ditto for Texas Tech-Houston.

In fact, speaking of Texas Tech and the Big 12, they are the reason why realignment talk is still alive. The Big 12 is not closing its doors and instead has ambitions of adding some of the best Group of Five schools in the country.

You know where that takes Fly War Eagle’s imagination? It has us fantasizing the best targets of the South in the Big 12’s crosshairs instead joining the SEC to further elevate the brand of the best conference in college football.

Here are 2 Big 12 targets we’d like to see in the SEC instead:
