Houston joins Texas and Texas A&M as SEC teams from the Lone Star State

When it comes to Houston joining the SEC, you need to remember that the Southeastern Conference is not to be taken literally as a title. Nine years ago, Texas A&M defied that label along with Missouri.

With the Longhorns (and Oklahoma Sooners) following suit this past summer, Houston could make sense as the next SEC addition from the Lone Star State.

Geographically, the Cougars would be a short ride from College Station and Baton Rouge, making Texas A&M and LSU easy-to-establish regional rivals. Not only that, but six straight years of producing an NFL pick in the first three rounds of the draft and a stretch from 2013-2018 where they won less than 60% of their games just once means that Houston isn’t far off from the middle of the SEC pack.

The AAC has had very talented programs at the top of the standings the past few years, but Houston will still need to show more than they have the past two seasons (7-13 record) in the coming years to ever make this a feasible reality.

That said, they still have the #1 passer in the history of the game (Case Keenum) and a major market behind them. Stranger things have happened.
