The Auburn football program is eight months into the Bryan Harsin era, and eight months removed from the years of Gus Malzahn, who was fired by Auburn last December. He didn’t stay unemployed for long before accepting the head coaching position at the University of Central Florida.

Malzahn is not a bad football coach, but he wasn’t meeting the standards of the Auburn community anymore. That being said, many were sad to see him go. Players and fans alike had much respect for Gus, and most people wished him well upon leaving the Plains.

One of Malzahn’s biggest supporters during his time at Auburn was head basketball coach Bruce Pearl. Their friendship has not ended just because Malzahn is no longer an Auburn football coach. In fact, Pearl attended Malzahn’s first game at UCF to support his friend:

Of course, it was pretty unsettling to see Auburn basketball coach Bruce Pearl decked out in full UCF gear, but if that’s what he needed to do to support the man he calls his brother then we’re all for it. No one is accusing Bruce of betraying the Tigers, and most Auburn football fans were delighted to see him there to support Gus and defended his actions:

Many Auburn fans were also quick to point out that Bruce Pearl’s appearance in Florida could only be good for the future of Auburn basketball:

At the end of the day, Gus Malzahn and Bruce Pearl are both Auburn men. Seeing one friend support another should only bring smiles to the faces of Auburn fans.
