Auburn football could continue to be the Grim Reaper in the SEC with yet another divisional win this weekend against Texas A&M.
Lane Kiffin was the last coach that Bryan Harsin’s Tigers put down. And perhaps closer to the Swamps of Louisiana and the payday that comes with it.
This past Saturday night, Auburn’s defense broke Kiffin’s spirit and forced three turnovers on downs and had an interception en route to aiding the offense–which was firing on all cylinders due to the offensive synergy created by Bo Nix and Tank Bigsby–to a two-score victory.
Could Jimbo Fisher be next?
To his credit, Fisher has said all of the right things to the media and may actually be sincere about it:
"“I love being here. This is the job I want. I love being here. I have an unbelievable chancellor, an unbelievable president, an unbelievable AD. I believe in what we’re building here.”"
Then again, he also said this:
"“I coached there [at LSU]. It was a great place. We won national championships. It is one of the best places in America. It’s a wonderful place.”"
As an assistant, he had great success on the Bayou. His career has seen the heights of a championship in Tallahassee with the Florida State Seminoles, but hasn’t exactly come close to those heights as the head coach of Texas A&M.
That could theoretically change this season if the Aggies could knock off Auburn football and win out. Given their one loss in SEC West play to the current CFP rankings’ #17 team and owning the tie-breaker over Alabama, a trip to the SEC Championship game in Atlanta is still on the table.
Beat Georgia and we’re talking about sneaking into the CFP because wining out means beating Auburn, and then Ole Miss and LSU on the road in the final month of the season.
But let’s slow that roll real quick. Harsin and co. could just as easily knock Fisher down a peg this weekend before Matt Corral rolls over a decent if unspectacular Texas A&M defensive front before ‘Coach O’ has a head coaching swan song to remember in Death Valley at the Aggies’ expense.
Then all of a sudden Auburn football will have potentially pushed another SEC head coach towards a potential windfall of money in the form of an LSU head coaching offer.
