Things have descended so dramatically for the Carolina Panthers that Cat Crave’s Dean Jones is calling for the return of Auburn football legend Cam Newton.

A 3-0 start to the season had many pundits thinking that not only could the elite defense–led by former Auburn football DT Derrick Brown, of course–make this team interesting, but that Sam Darnold turning the corner could be what puts Carolina over the top.

Well, down they went as Darnold showed his true colors as a disappointing former #3 pick from just three and a half years ago that is unlikely to ever live up to his draft slot.

Jones believes that the Panthers need to consider bringing back the former 2015 MVP Panthers signal-caller:

"As stated previously, for Cam Newton to still be seeking employment is a bizarre situation. There are multiple teams – the Carolina Panthers included – who should be putting a call in his direction given their problems under center, with some injuries to key men like Jameis Winston failing to come with any interest."

He also believes, though, that it’s probably not destined to happen:

"This all comes down to timing. Newton waited and got the right situation in 2020 before his release this offseason, but we are now at the midseason point and things are looking bleak if the Heisman Trophy winner wants to see the field in any capacity during the current campaign."

The Auburn family got a taste of Cam Newton back on the Plains, with an appearance at Jordan-Hare Stadium during the Tigers’ October 9th matchup against Georgia. While it’d be a storybook ending to see Newton have another homecoming in Carolina, it just might not be in the cards.

Too bad for the Panthers. They have still yet to successfully replace the 2010 Heisman winner since the start of the 2020 season.
