Auburn basketball won wire to wire on Tuesday night during their home opener against Morehead State at the Auburn Arena.
The triumph was an emphatic one, with AU running out to a 9-0 run within minutes and pulling away in the second half to cover the spread and put an exclamation point on their dominating performance against a 2020-21 tournament team.
Tiger fans saw some rough patches from their young team but saw a convincing trouncing over the Ohio Valley Conference foe.
Morehead State’s Twitter was watching the games through rose-colored lenses, though, and highlighted a stat that Auburn basketball fans felt obligated to call out:
Really weird way to say we lost by 23 https://t.co/XojwhgdbnM pic.twitter.com/OwTNAqJZEP

Boy that's a Soviet Russia propaganda level of spin. Wow. https://t.co/Uex3bCmIpR

Auburn football shut out Georgia 14-0 in the fourth quarter of its 21-14 loss to the Bulldogs in 2019. https://t.co/Lm7AlBU6ag

You took a 23 point loss. Just say that https://t.co/37T2pTQyeT

Overall, the Eagles do have reasons to hang their head high. Big man Johni Broome was able to get shots off and compete on the boards with a supersized Tigers frontcourt, while Ta’lon Cooper converted at the rim several times and played dogged defense, collecting two steals and a block. The duo both reached double figures, and Skyelar Potter scored nine points on 50% shooting.
Those were all performances worth highlighting, but the decision to cherry pick the stats to make it seem like Morehead State was in control at any point in this game is misleading at best and deceiving at worst.
Ultimately, though, Auburn basketball fans have bigger things to worry about than how an opposing team frames a 23-point loss on the Plains.
