Former Auburn football quarterback Cam Newton is officially back in the game. After being released by the New England Patriots prior to the beginning of the season, Newton has been sidelined with free-agent status. Now, he’s returning to the team that made him into the No. 1 overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft.
The Carolina Panther reported that the team has officially agreed to terms with the quarterback and he will return to Charlotte pending a physical. Newton will provide badly needed depth to the Panthers, whose starting QB Sam Darnold is expected to be out for four to six weeks due to a shoulder injury.
Newton played nine seasons with the Carolina Panthers after being drafted and led them all the way to the Super Bowl in 2015 before spending the next few seasons battling injuries. He was released in 2019 and signed by the Patriots, who then waived the QB earlier this year.
To most Auburn football fans, Newton’s return to Charlotte only feels right. He’ll be joining former Auburn football defensive lineman Derrick Brown and sporting a jersey he wore for nearly a decade:

Wanna see Cam walk back into the Panthers facilities and grab his #1 jersey, original locker, and parking spot like nothing ever happened.

In his career with the Panthers, Newton passed for 29,041 and 182 touchdowns. He rushed for an additional 58 touchdowns and leads the NFL in rushing touchdowns by a quarterback. Now, like another former Auburn QB, Cam Newton is back in action!
