Auburn football: Why Dell McGee would make a great fit for OC

Early signing day is just one week away and Auburn football still doesn’t have a new offensive coordinator. With so many other big programs currently going through head coaching changes, it’s not the worst position for the Tigers to be in but it’s also not great. Recruits will be looking for stability and a solid vision, and you need an offensive coordinator to fully sell that vision.

One reason Bryan Harsin and the Tigers could be waiting so long to make a hire is that they’re trying to get the best person for the program, and that person could be currently coaching a team that is about to make a national championship run. Dell McGee is #3 Georgia’s run game coordinator and running backs coach, but it could be his time to return to the Plains.

McGee played Auburn football from 1992-1995 and later worked as an analyst for the team under former head coach Gus Malzahn in 2013. The year 2021 would be a perfect year for McGee to have his Auburn homecoming.

Since joining the Bulldogs’ staff in 2016, McGee has developed a reputation as an outstanding recruiter, which is exactly what Auburn football needs after bringing in a head coach from across the country. He was named 247Sports’ National Recruiter of the Year in 2018 after Georgia brought in the #1 class in the country and the SEC.

It’s imperative that the Tigers recruit well in the Peach State, and McGee could be the key that unlocks that door for Harsin. Though some have pointed out that McGee has no playcalling experience and seems to mostly work with running backs, that wouldn’t be an issue. Harsin would simply take over those duties like he did at Boise State.

With another former play-caller on the staff already in wide receivers coach Eric Kiesau, Harsin has plenty of room to make a hire that will benefit the program in other ways, primarily in recruiting.
