Auburn football transfer portal target #1: TE Jake Tonges, Cal

The California Golden Bears ended the 2021 season on a high-note, defeating the USC Trojans during championship weekend in a game rescheduled due to COVID-19. Luckily, that game was an anomaly and not one of many.

Anyway, the win was the fifth of the season for Cal, which fell short of bowl eligibility. Not surprisingly, leaving Berkley, California is something several Golden Bears plan on doing with an unsuccessful program in a market that couldn’t care less about football.

One of them is TE Jake Tonges, who is among the team’s most effective pass-catchers. Tonges ranked third in receiving yards, yards per catch, and touchdowns while placing fourth in total catches on the season.

Tonges was not the most highly-sought after recruit coming out of high school, but his sophomore and senior seasons make him a target after entering the transfer portal.

With Texas eyeing the fifth-year grad transfer, Auburn could seek him as a replacement for outgoing senior John Samuel Shenker on the depth chart.

We’re not expecting similar numbers as Shenker, who had one of the best seasons from a TE on the Plains in decades. But he is no stranger to big plays, making him desirable for the orange and blue.
