13 games have come and gone in the 2021 Auburn football season. 6-7 was the final tally after the Tigers’ 17-13 Birmingham Bowl loss to Houston on Tuesday afternoon.

Five straight losses to end the season will do that to you.

Once Bo Nix went down on November 13th with a season-ending ankle injury, it was clear that winning the Iron Bowl was going to be an uphill battle. Losing to South Carolina first set the stage for a .500 regular-season finish. But Auburn didn’t need to finish 2021 with a losing record.

TJ Finley largely struggled in the passing game, though, either overthrowing or underthrowing targets and even fumbling the obligatory low-snap-for-a-six-foot-seven-QB. The counting stats (227 yards, one TD, no INTs) simply don’t tell the full story.

In response to the struggles, fans voiced their dismay for Finley’s stint under center. But a cryptic tweet from redshirt freshman Dematrius Davis, who didn’t take a single snap in 2021, got the Auburn family sharing their thoughts on the QB situation in 2022.

Meaning, Tiger fans want Dee at QB:

I’ll say this much: it’s not the greatest look for a freshman QB recruited by the previous coach to be thanking God for getting him through the season. Clearly, Davis was on a much different wavelength than the coaching staff even after the dismissal of Mike Bobo at OC.

That doesn’t necessarily mean a trip to the transfer portal is imminent, but he wouldn’t be the first Gus Malzahn signal-caller signee to bolt after a year under Bryan Harsin.

The Auburn football QB situation is as fluid as ever, though, with Finley struggling down the stretch of this season as the starter. Davis has this coming spring to prove that he is a preferable option to incoming freshman Holden Geriner, as well as beat out Finley (assuming he doesn’t transfer himself) under center.
