Auburn football fans are stressed about their QB situation as the calendar year turns to 2022.
Bo Nix seemed like the answer after overcoming a serious sophomore slump and some early-season struggles, but he’s in Eugene, Oregon now playing for a Pac-12 program. TJ Finley certainly doesn’t seem like the answer after what Tiger fans saw in the three losses he was the starting QB for, which included 53/105 passing, several fumbles from a snap, and countless balls either overthrown or spiked into the dirt. Dematrius Davis didn’t play all year in 2021 and Holden Geriner is still in high school.
That stress is leading to some restlessness, which is leading to random Redditors having the power to ignite an Auburn fanbase anxiously awaiting the final college football game of the year crowning one of their two most heated rivals as the country’s champion.
Check out how fans reacted to the idea of Oklahoma Sooners QB Caleb Williams transferring to the Tigers because of a NIL offer from AU that OU is unwilling to match, an idea first seen in a post on r/CFB:
All in all, Tiger fans understand that Caleb Williams leaving Oklahoma just days after a three-touchdown, 21/27 passing performance is improbable at best and laughable at worst.
Williams took over for Spencer Rattler in October and threw for 14 TDs with just one interception in his first four games. He struggled against eventual Sugar Bowl champion Baylor, but still finished with 21 TDs, four INTs, six rushing touchdowns and amassed over 2,000 all-purpose yards in 2021.
He’d be the perfect answer to the current Auburn football QB problems, but the lack of a top-line OL and WR room in the SEC would make transferring to AU a step down from leading OU in their final years before making the jump to the southeast shark tank.
Expect the freshman to stay put and the Tigers to seek an in-house option if no headliner under center hits the transfer portal.
