Auburn football fans split on landing Zach Calzada from transfer portal
As things stand, most Auburn football fans are probably not overjoyed at what the QB position will look like in 2022.
It’s not that incoming freshman out of Benedictine Military, Holden Geriner, didn’t show his worth at the Under Armour All-American game yesterday. In fact, confidence in the 4-star pro-style gunslinger is high after Geriner completed several passes in the hurry-up as the first half came to a close in Team Icon’s 23-17 victory.
But putting the hopes of one of the SEC’s pillar programs–with the pressure of a 6-7 debut season for Bryan Harsin and co. looming–in a freshman would be asking a lot out of any first-year signal-caller.
So, the more likely scenario, as things stand, is AU rolling into the 2022 season with TJ Finley as QB1 unless the coaching staff has a change of heart and wants to give Dematrius Davis a chance. We’re not holding our breath any longer on that front.
Tiger fans don’t like the idea of Finley starting, but what would they think about Texas A&M QB Zach Calzada making his way to Auburn football (who he beat 20-3 in 2021) via the transfer portal?
Well, the fanbase doesn’t seem in agreement about it:
Calzada finished 2021 with a 56% completion rate, 2,185 passing yards, 17 touchdowns and nine interceptions after taking over as the starter for Haynes King after a fractured leg ended his season Week 2 against Colorado.
Fly War Eagle sees a homecoming return to his home state of Georgia as more likely than an Auburn transfer. That said, maybe Calzada’s upcoming campus visit could turn things around and give the Tigers a fourth option for QB1 in 2022.
