Auburn football transfer portal QB option #2: Cameron Ward
Fly War Eagle doesn’t exactly believe that Cameron Ward is the kind of transfer prospect worth cluttering up the QB with…that is of course, if there aren’t any departures that thin things out in the coming weeks.
TJ Finley came to the Plains with hopes of receiving a chance to start under center for the Tigers, and he got it. It just didn’t go as one could have hoped for. Then again, it did align with how LSU fared when Finley stepped into the starting role in 2020.
Dematrius Davis, meanwhile, didn’t see the field once in 2021, even with Finley clearly hobbled during the Iron Bowl. He maintained a redshirt the entire season which is good for his remaining eligibility, but he’s also seen AU add two QBs (Holden Geriner, Zach Calzada) since committing. It’s unclear if he’ll stick around long enough to pair with the perfect OC/QB coach fit for his talents, Austin Davis.
As dominant as Ward was this past season at Incarnate Word–and we’re talking six games eclipsing 350 passing yards and seven games eclipsing four passing touchdowns, so yeah, dominant–he’s still unproven against anything close to SEC competition. There could be a steep learning curve there.
That said, the intrigue is so high in his gaudy numbers that Auburn figures to remain among the long list of teams (Indiana, Ole Miss, North Texas, Houston, West Virginia, Florida, Nebraska, Troy, Texas State, Western Kentucky, and Liberty) interested in him.
