If you thought the search for Auburn football’s next QB1 was over with the recent commitment of former Texas A&M quarterback Zach Calzada, think again.
Calzada announced yesterday that he would officially be transferring to the Plains, which made everyone think that the Tigers were not going to be in the running for Oklahoma transfer Caleb Williams. But, according to Jeffrey Lee of Auburn Live, head coach Bryan Harsin and offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Austin Davis are still recruiting, and the former Sooner is their top priority:
"Williams officially entered the transfer portal earlier this week and understandably several schools came calling. Auburn was one of them.It won’t be easy for Auburn to sign Williams as it faces a long list of competitors. However, knowledgable sources believe Auburn has “a good shot.”"
A 5-star recruit out of high school, Williams passed for 1,916 yards and 21 touchdowns in addition to rushing for 442 yards and six touchdowns as a freshman for the Sooners. He called his future into question after former head coach Lincoln Riley abruptly took the USC job and left Oklahoma.
When it comes to transfers, they don’t sign with a program the same way as high school recruits, meaning nothing is really final until they step foot in the classroom. Per the Auburn University academic calendar, the first day of the spring 2022 semester is January 12, and the last day to add classes is January 19. Therefore, we should have a decision from Caleb Williams in the next two weeks.
Should Auburn football miss out on the former Sooner, Lee reports that the staff will likely turn their attention to former Oregon backup quarterback Robby Ashford, a native of Hoover, Alabama.
Though it may be a longshot, Austin Davis and Bryan Harsin are still going after Caleb Williams, and it’s a real possibility we could see the former 5-star in orange and blue next season.
