It isn’t clear if TJ Finley still has any sway with the Auburn football head coaching staff after the way the 2021 season ended. If he does, Louisiana WR transfer Kyren Lacy has a notable supporter in the Tigers locker-room.

Finley had the unfortunate task of stepping into the starting QB role when the team was on the downslide. He was thrown into the fire of the Mississippi State matchup late after a historic collapse by the defense, and he had two tough matchups against a scrappy South Carolina team that later won the Duke’s Mayo Bowl (and poured mayo on Gamecocks coach Shane Beamer’s head) and the National Championship runner-up, Alabama. He passed neither test, though he came close to being the winning QB of an Iron Bowl that AU was leading 10-0 heading into the fourth quarter of.

Then, there was the Birmingham Bowl…

We’ve been rough on Finley since that game, and quite frankly, it might have been the Birmingham traffic–that stuck with FWE after witnessing the Tigers clinch their first losing season since 2012–forcing any thoughts of his performance to turn sour in retrospect. In fact, I’d be remiss not shouting out Finley’s spectacular touchdown catch to Kobe Hudson, the latter’s last wearing orange and blue.

All of this is to explain Finley’s current standing with the Auburn fanbase and give a little context to his message to a transferring Ragin’ Cajun WR recruit that’s gotten a look from Bryan Harsin and co.:

Taking a page out of future teammate Holden Geriner’s book, Finley took to Twitter to get the word out to fellow Louisianan–Lacy was a Thibodeaux product while Finley went to Ponchatoula, about an hour and change northeast–that the Plains is home.

Perhaps Lacy felt that way, as many do, during his visit. Hopefully he did, since the WR ranks have thinned considerably and Auburn football could use a redzone target that has come away with 10 TDs over the last two years.
