Auburn football is poised to make another addition to the coaching staff ahead of the start of winter workouts. After Nick Eason joined Bryan Harsin’s inaugural staff on the Plains in 2020 to coach the defensive line, he made the decision earlier this month to return to his alma mater Clemson as the defensive tackles coach and run game coordinator.
Slotted to take his place is Auburn alum and former Tennessee defensive line coach Jimmy Brumbaugh. He played defensive end for the Tigers from 1995-1999, was an All-SEC selection, and finished his career with 291 total tackles.
Brumbaugh has played a role on the coaching staff of over 10 schools, most notably at LSU as the strength coach during their 2008 national championship season and at Kentucky as the defensive line coach from 2013-2016. Other stops include Syracuse, Colorado, Maryland, and Louisiana Tech.
The Auburn alum was hired by former Tennessee coach Jeremy Pruitt in 2020, but only coached four games and was fired mid-season. Several months later, when Pruitt and many members of the coaching staff were fired over NCAA violations, Brumbaugh was not involved in the investigation, per Knox News.
Last season Brumbaugh served as a defensive analyst for the Oregon Ducks before making the move to the Plains. Throughout his extensive coaching career, Brumbaugh has worked with 17 draft picks including six first-rounders.
The addition of Jimmy Brumbaugh should complete head coach Bryan Harsin’s 2022 on-field staff after losing four of his original hires. Brumbaugh will replace Nick Eason, and reports indicate that linebackers coach Jeff Schmedding will be promoted to Auburn football’s defensive coordinator once Derek Mason leaves for Oklahoma State. Former Florida coach Christian Robinson will replace Schmedding as the linebackers coach for the 2022 season.
