Auburn football transfer portal: Mizzou fans love Ian Mathews addition
Auburn football has been losing pieces ranging from star QB to depth pieces on the defensive side of the football, and the latter was the case on Sunday.
Local product Ian Mathews went the way of Lee Hunter and left the program following Derek Mason’s own departure to Oklahoma State to be the Cowboys defensive coordinator. Mathews is from Columbus, Georgia, the first town on the Georgia side of the Alabama-Peach State line, about half an hour east of the Plains.
Mathews knows that the SEC just means more, so he’ll remain in conference, though he’ll be jumping from the shark-infested waters of the SEC West to the two-horse race (Georgia, Florida) in the SEC East to be a Missouri Tiger.
Fans of old Mizzou are happy about the addition:
While Mathews never made it onto the field for a snap under Bryan Harsin in his first season, he was a highly sought-after high school recruit who fielded offers from the likes of Virginia Tech, Florida State, South Carolina, Florida State, and Arkansas, to name a few.
During his most recent transfer portal entry, UAB and Georgia Tech registered interest in the local product.
At six-foot-five and 290 pounds, it doesn’t take much of a witch hunt to find the root of the reason why the Tigers had to fight off nine other teams to corral his services…if only for a season.
With Missouri on the schedule during Week 4 of the 2022 season, it’ll be interesting to see if Mathews will get a chance to show Auburn football what it was missing in not giving him a chance.
