Media members swarmed Auburn football head coach Bryan Harsin at the annual SEC head coaches meeting in Birmingham today, but they didn’t get what they want.
“Do you plan to be the coach of Auburn next season?” was the question WBRC’s Lynden Blake asked Harsin as he was walking out of the meeting in downtown Birmingham.
*crickets*
The never-ending Auburn football head coaching saga continues another day, and clarity feels no closer than it did a week ago when all of the allegations, Board of Trustees secret plans, and player comments first came about.
BamaHammer’s Ronald Evans, who predictably has never been one to give Harsin an ounce of credit for anything, believes that Harsin is a lame-duck coach that the program is biding its time to fire because Kevin Steele will just be waiting in the wings:
"Maybe what is happening on the Plains is Auburn will somewhat patiently build a new case for termination of Bryan Harsin. The Tigers will be an awful team next season whatever happens. As long as they know Steele will make the move whenever called, not rushing could save them most or all of $18M."
This would lend credence to what Jake ‘Jboy’ Crane recently alluded to.
Of course, Steele is now at Miami, though the college football world is notorious for coaches never starting before leaving their posts for a better opportunity. Auburn football fans experienced an early exit from former (never?) Tigers OC Austin Davis. They also experienced Tracy Rocker do the same in 2021, landing with the Philadelphia Eagles, though Rocker had at least served in the DL coaching role on the Plains before.
With Harsin appearing at SEC HQ today, one would think there’s a chance Harsin does stick after all. But it appears BamaHammer is going to be lurking in the shadows ready to remind Auburn of Kevin Steele at every turn moving forward.
