Auburn football HC Bryan Harsin had some very interesting comments about the spring camp QB battle on Saturday.

Harsin showered praise on the current QB room, speaking to their ability to take criticism and ability to implement those critiques in their games moving forward.

Of course, not every signal-caller that came into the offseason has survived the pre-A-Day portion of the spring.

Is it possible that Harsin gave us an idea of why Dematrius Davis took to the transfer portal at the end of March?

Here were his comments via Justin Hokanson of On3:

"“What I look for in the quarterbacks is that they want the feedback. All those guys have been that way. When you get a quarterback that doesn’t want to be coached, he’s not going to play for you.”"

Former Auburn football QB Dematrius Davis never saw a snap for the Tigers

Dee Davis had the misfortune of graduating high school in 2021, losing a traditional high school senior season in the process. The Lone Star State stud still exceled at North Shore in Houston, collecting two state titles in his sophomore and junior seasons, but the timing of his NCAA jump was cursed due to the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact on recruiting and practice procedures.

It’s important to remember that Davis was recruited by Gus Malzahn and signed to the program when there wasn’t even a replacement in place yet. It was always going to be difficult for Bryan Harsin to integrate him after inheriting incumbent starter Bo Nix and nabbing T.J. Finley to push for the QB1 role.

Whatever the case is, all parties are better off. Harsin has two upperclassmen QBs (T.J. Finley, Zach Calzada) with SEC experience that are next in line for the starting job and have freshman Holden Geriner waiting in the wings when he becomes ready. Davis is better off transferring to a school with lower expectations that will give him a chance to see the field.

Auburn football has the depth to survive, and Davis has the talent to still thrive. Fly War Eagle wishes Dematrius Davis luck in the next step of his CFB career.
