Former Auburn football QB Dematrius Davis chose the perfect landing spot with Alabama State in this writer’s opinion.

Is it because of the proximity from the Plains to Montgomery, the home of both the ASU Hornets and the notorious HoneyBeez?

Perhaps. Seeing who AU let get away first-hand is an intriguing prospect if all it takes is a 45-minute drive on I85.

But clearly, Davis is excited about this opportunity, and Auburn football fans should similarly be:

Former Auburn football QB Dematrius Davis joins a talented ASU QB room

As AL.com’s Tom Green pointed out, there is a ton of talent in the Alabama QB room as it stands:

"Davis joins a quarterback room in Montgomery that includes the reigning SWAC Freshman of the Year, Ryan Nettles, as well as Myles Cawley and Joe Owens Jr., all three of whom started at least one game last season. Nettles completed 59.51 percent of his passes for 1,194 yards, 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions in eight games last spring, while Crawley threw for 459 yards, five touchdowns and one interception while completing 53.85 percent of his passes over eight games for the Hornets. Owens completed 45-of-66 passes for 441 yards, three touchdowns and two scores while starting the final two games of the season and leading Alabama State to wins in each of those outings."

There’s no guarantee Davis will be QB1, but he’s the highest-rated recruit on the Hornets as it stands. Given his historic success as a Texas high school football star in the Houston area, it’d be far from shocking to see him win the starting job.

If Davis could reach his potential with Alabama State, it would be a major boon for HBCU’s, which in turn, would be a major boon for college football considering the HBCU’s all sit in states that are talent-rich and passionate for pigskin.
