After the untimely ending to the 2021-22 Auburn basketball season and the announcements that Freshman of the Year Jabari Smith and Defensive Player of the Year Walker Kessler will be entering their names into the 2022 NBA Draft, all eyes have been on head coach Bruce Pearl as he works to rebuild the Tigers’ roster.
Longtime signees 4-star Chance Westry and 3-star Tre Donaldson will join the squad next season, along with 5-star Yohan Traore, who committed to the Tigers following the firing of Will Wade at LSU where Traore was previously committed.
While fans have been waiting to see if another former LSU commit, Julian Phillips, will head to the Plains for his collegiate career, Pearl and his coaching staff have been focused on the transfer portal, particularly former Morehead State big man Johni Broome.
Auburn basketball offered the big man soon after Broome entered the portal, and after a few weeks, his decision was set between the Tigers and the Florida Gators. Today, Broome officially became an Auburn Tiger, and fans could not be more excited:
Broome was the Ohio Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Year last season and recorded 131 blocks last season in addition to averaging 16.8 points, 10.5 blocks, and 1.2 assists per game while shooting at 55.5 percent from the field. After two seasons with Morehead State, Broome will have three years of eligibility remaining.
Now, Auburn basketball has one scholarship left, and many expect it to go to former LSU commit and 5-star power forward Julian Phillips.
