Auburn football transfer portal target No. 2: WR Ray Rose

After initially committing to North Carolina, the premiere Power Five program in the entire state, to commit to Group of Five East Carolina of the American, Ray Rose found himself completely underutilized for his entire freshman season in 2021.

Unable to crack the rotation for an offense that exploded under fourth-year gunslinger Holton Ahlers, the former 4-star recruit took to the transfer portal this week to find an immediate opportunity to play.

While East Central Alabama is quite a drive from Belmont, NC, it should be noted that Tennessee was in on his recruitment back in 2018. Committing to an out of state SEC program was possible beyond the chance he wanted to join Will Muschamp’s South Carolina Gamecocks.

The Tigers could use another pass-catcher with the kind of pedigree Rose possesses, though it’s possible that Rose could actually be downgrading his pass-thrower by committing to play with T.J. Finley or Zach Calzada. Ahlers was in the top 30 for passing yards in 2021. For reference, the Greenville, SC QB threw for over 800 more yards than Bo Nix, who only played in two less games last year.

If Rose is comfortable with growing pains and facing several of the top secondaries in the country, Auburn football would be a great landing spot.
