Auburn football rumors: Lane Kiffin could be targeted after 2022 season
Auburn football may have a contingency plan in place of Bryan Harsin doesn’t work out on the Plains.
The Tigers reportedly have an eye on Ole Miss HC Lane Kiffin, according to The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman and Matt Fortuna:
"“His (Kiffin) shoot-from-the-hip style may turn off some A.D.s and presidents, but he seems less risky than he did back in his FAU days and less so by the year in Oxford, where, by all accounts, things have gone fairly smooth on – and off the field. To their credit, the Rebels have stepped up considerably to support him and the program, paying him well over $7 million a year. Then again, if Auburn targets him to contend with his old boss Nick Saban, the Tigers would likely make a big move for him financially and could offer him more recent history to compete for championships…”"
Auburn football can help their own cause if they really want Lane Kiffin
The over/under total for this upcoming Auburn football season has been set at a meager 5.5 games. Las Vegas is projecting the Tigers’ win total in 2022 to be at or below where they have finished the past two years.
If Bryan Harsin really is just a lame duck coach that is set to be fired after getting only two years to turn around a program that regularly competes against the toughest competition in the country, they can help their own cause in hiring their dream target on October 15th when they travel to Oxford to take on the Rebels.
Ole Miss lost Matt Corral, running backs Jerrion Ealy and Snoop Conner, and wide receivers Dontario Drummond and Braylon Sanders this offseason. If Jaxson Dart’s accuracy isn’t present in Kiffin’s run-and-gun offense, the Rebels could be set to disappoint after their third 10-win season since the turn of the century.
Should that happen, Kiffin and AU could both find themselves in need of a fresh start this coming winter, and a union would be more welcomed now than it would have been after Gus Malzahn’s dismissal in 2020 because of a brilliant 2021 for Ole Miss.
