Auburn football transfer portal WR target Javon Baker was almost a Kentucky Wildcat this offseason, but UK has since pulled his scholarship offer and put the former Alabama wideout back on the transfer market.

Baker himself is not worried, saying this in response on his Instagram:

"“Guess they did de-commit me. I wanted to play for Kentucky. Bigger and better plans, the most high got me.”"

Baker is now looking for a new home, and coincidentally, Auburn has a WR room that still lacks experience even after adding Hewitt-Trussville product Dazalin Worsham from the portal via the University of Miami.

It’s not hard to find a fit for Baker, a former 4-star WR out of Powder Springs, Georgia, on the Auburn football depth chart. That said, it’s not as though signing Baker instantly solves all the problems that limited him to nine catches for 116 yards and a touchdown in Tuscaloosa.

As Auburn Daily’s Andrew Stefaniak relayed, Baker could end up being a ‘fix-up project’ for Bryan Harsin, Ike Hilliard, and co.:

"“Baker would be an excellent addition to an Auburn team that needs some desperate help at the receiver position. Coming out of high school, Baker was a top 200 recruit, so we know the talent is there. He would be eligible to play this upcoming season if he were to head to the Plains, but most likely, he would be a fix-up project for Coach Harsin and his staff.”"

Auburn football could use more help at WR

Baker would be a fantastic add from a pedigree standpoint even if he has some issues needing to be worked out. Clearly, there are issues with the wideout behind the scenes that have caused underperformance with the Crimson Tide and whatever caused Kentucky to pull their scholarship offer.

If those could be sorted out, though, Baker could be an unsung contributor in the Tigers WR room in 2022 much like Demetris Robertson was a season ago under similar circumstances.
