Auburn football HC Bryan Harsin is a fan of the SEC’s newly implemented transfer rules from 2021, aka a Feb. 1 deadline for players in fall sports to enter the transfer portal to be eligible to transfer to another school within the league.

While not as high on praise as other coaches within the conference, Harsin did speak positively about the transfer model:

"“I still think we’re working through that right now from everyone. I didn’t think what we did this year was a bad model, and we had that discussion before.”"

Georgia HC Kirby Smart was more descriptive in how he sees these rules working out for the various programs within college football’s flagship conference:

"“A lot of times, I think it’s for the good of the player (to transfer). We’ve had some kids that realized in the spring that they may not get the opportunity that they so desire and they want to go look at other schools. There’s hundreds of schools that you go look at; saying they can’t go in the SEC, I think it’s a good thing to have a date set earlier, if they make a decision coming out of the season if they want to explore their options within the SEC.”"

Auburn football has landed key SEC transfers the past two offseasons

Bryan Harsin can’t complain too much about the transfer rules since they didn’t prevent him from landing an in-conference QB this past offseason or last. T.J. Finley utilized the post-COVID-19 stricken landscape last May to make way to the Plains by way of the Bayou, while Zach Calzada committed to Auburn this past January after a season starting under center for Texas A&M.

While the transfer portal has taken Tigers and sent them to other SEC programs–including three this offseason alone–it’s not as though it hasn’t giveth as well.
