Auburn baseball is still alive in the 2022 College World Series off the strength of a 6-2 win Monday afternoon against the Stanford Cardinal in a loser’s bracket elimination game. On Tuesday night, they battle with the SEC squad with the second most wins overall in 2022, Arkansas.
The Razorbacks are reeling from a 13-5 loss to Rebels, who scored 10 runs in the first five innings through bottom-of-the-lineup contributions. Ole Miss went up 2-0 in the first off a Kevin Graham RBI single and a Hayden Dunhurst RBI walk, then added two more runs in the second on a 416-foot home run from Tim Elko, his 23rd of the season to extend the lead to 4-1. While the Razorbacks had it 4-3 by the end of the second frame, Ole Miss exploded for another two runs in the third and then blew the game wide open with a four-run fifth inning.
Auburn baseball saved themselves with a four-run sixth inning that included a bases-loaded, two-run double from Cole Foster. Trace Bright picked up the win with a five-inning, five-hit, two-run, eight-strikeout, walk-less effort, while Blake Burkhalter struck out five in two and 1/3 innings to pick up a one-hit save, his 16th of the year.
The Tigers now must overcome Arkansas, who took two of three when they came to Plainsman Park back in early May. Will they be able to even things up and send the Hogs home, or will Tuesday night be the swan song for Auburn athletics in the 2021-22 athletic year?
