Former Auburn football RB/CB Devan Barrett has found his third school, which will be his first outside of central Alabama, with the decision to transfer to the University of Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas. Barrett took to the transfer portal following the pandemic-stricken 2020 season after Gus Malzahn was announced not to return. The Tampa product stayed in-state with the decision to transfer to Troy.

Barrett famously became a defensive back in 2019 but played limited snaps in seven games as a rotation corner. He chose not to participate in the 2020 season due to fears of the COVID-19 pandemic. Barrett’s 2021 season was similar to his second season on the Plains in that he amassed registering eight total tackles and a sack.

Also like his final days with Auburn football, Barrett saw a regime change and collective team struggles: Troy ended the year going just 5-7 and fired Trojans HC Chip Lindsey in late November before hiring Kentucky assistant Jon Sumrall to replace him.

Auburn football was passed on by Incarnate Word’s QB in the transfer portal

Just days after Zach Calzada committed to the Tigers as a transfer quarterback out of Texas A&M, Cameron Ward chose Washington State as his own next home after transferring from the University of Incarnate Word.

A week after Ward went with Wazzou, Robby Ashford made his way to the Plains. It’s not hard to connect the dots and see that Ashford’s spot was one Ward could have taken had he chose the Tigers.

Ward was an elite FCS gunslinger in his two seasons at UIC, earning All-American honors in 2021 following a 4,648 passing-yard campaign that was accompanied by a 65% completion rate (384 of 590)  and 47 touchdown passes to just 10 interceptions. In Pullman, he won’t have much in the way of competition, unlike Auburn, where he would have had to beat out Calzada and incumbent starter T.J. Finley.
