Auburn football apparently has a ‘heavy favorite to win the job’ according to On3’s Justin Hokanson: Texas A&M Aggies transfer Zach Calzada, one of the incoming third-year signal-callers from the portal this offseason.

Calzada was previously tipped as the odds-on favorite to win the Heisman of anyone in the room, with his chances to win the award second behind only Auburn running back Tank Bigsby of the qualified Tigers.

The Sugar Hill, Georgia product has been showing out in summer training, being described by quarterback coach Ray Isaac, a former FCS Champion QB with Youngstown State, as having exceptional mental toughness and football IQ.

The Auburn football QB battle appears to be decided

In recent weeks, several outlets have been talking about the three-way QB battle on the Plains. Alexander City Outlook’s Andy Graham said that ‘as of today, Auburn football has three true contenders at quarterback who will battle it out during fall practice to see who becomes the leader of the team.’ CBS Sports’ Barrett Sallee listed Auburn among the programs that are still undecided on their starter.

It’s not looking like there actually is a QB battle, assuming Zach Calzada will be fully healthy by the time the September 3rd opener against Mercer rolls around. Robby Ashford, despite showing out at A-Day, is still not seen as a legitimate threat to steal the starting spot. T.J. Finley didn’t separate himself from his struggles last year to convince fans that he is the answer either.

Bryan Harsin’s fate may rest in the hands of Calzada, and that isn’t a bad place for this regime to be all things considered.
