So far, the Auburn football team has had four practices during fall camp, and all eyes are on the quarterbacks room as the guys compete for the coveted role of QB1 of the 2022 season.

For most of the summer, fans have watched videos of former Texas A&M Aggie Zach Calzada spinning the ball on Twitter, and many believe that he is the most likely candidate for QB1. After a disappointing stint with TJ Finley as the offensive leader at the end of last season, fans seem to have lost faith despite the praise he continues to receive from the staff.

In most conversations concerning Auburn football’s quarterbacks, the chatter revolves around Calzada and Finley, but as the Tigers get through fall camp it seems that Oregon transfer Robby Ashford has not yet fallen out of the race, and continues to push Calzada and Finley for the job.

After the fourth fall practice, head coach Bryan Harsin offered up some comments on the quarterbacks, beginning with Zach Calzada. Although the QB was sidelined for most of the spring and summer with a shoulder injury, Harsin said he wasn’t sure that Calzada “had any rust” and looked “pretty good,” per AL.com.

Harsin noted that this morning saw one of the most consistent practices from the quarterbacks, and he had high praise for Robby Ashford, who was named offensive player of the day after practice on Sunday. Ashford was credited for better decision making during fall camp, and it is said that his ability to move well on his feet continues to be an offensive weapon.

So, while the situation seems to be that Finley and Calzada are primarily splitting first team reps at this time, Ashford is continuing to improve and make his case for being the starter in Bryan Harsin’s second season on the Plains.
