According to Auburn football linebacker Wesley Steiner, there are a lot of similarities between last year’s starting QB Bo Nix and the signal-caller the Tigers got in return as part of the transfer portal ‘trade‘ with Oregon, Robby Ashford.

Steiner said that ‘a lot like Bo Nix, Robby’s a pain in the butt’ and added ‘I like all the quarterbacks, but the one I hate the most is Robby.’ Obviously, Steiner wasn’t indicating a personal vendetta with the dual-threat QB so much as he’s sick of chasing him all over the field.

Steiner is expected to take on a bigger role in the LB room during the 2022 season with Zakoby McClain and Chandler Wooten now in the NFL. Third-year Cam Riley is similarly expected to elevate his presence on the defensive front this coming fall. Auburn football LB coach Christian Robinson sees both becoming major contributors this season (h/t Opelika Auburn News):

"“It’s just coming along and building and picking one or two things each day to progress on, but we’re excited for both of them. I mean, certainly they’re in that competition. They both want to play. They both have roles on special teams. And right now it’s about taking the next step for both of them.”"

Auburn football QBs Robby Ashford and Zach Calzada both behind T.J. Finley right now

Just when you thought the Tigers offense had it all figured out with Zach Calzada as the ‘heavy favorite‘ to win the QB1 job and Robby Ashford was likely to have special packages designed to make him a change-of-pace signal-caller, T.J. Finley emerges as the likely starter.

Things could change with several practices and scrimmages left before the September 3rd opener, and the light schedule the first two weeks ensures that the QB competition has about a month left before truly needing to be resolved. But right now, the narrative for much of the offseason has been flipped on its head.
