Auburn football fans were reveling in the defensive slip-ups the Oklahoma State defense displayed during their 56-44 victory over Central Michigan of the MAC — mainly because the Tigers had their defensive coordinator, Derek Mason, poached by the Pokes this past January.

Mason’s departure came right as the infamous Auburn University Board of Trustees offseason inquiry into Bryan Harsin was just getting started. His and Nick Eason’s departures were seen as potential warning signs that the current administration on the Plains was destined for doom.

Given Allen Greene’s resignation as the Athletic Director, it wasn’t totally off-base, but that isn’t as much an Auburn football issue as much as it affects the entire athletic department. Harsin rebuilt his coaching staff with guys he worked with at Boise State and has a defense that has elite talent along the trenches that will hopefully shine with good coaching.

Oklahoma State, although they lost five of their top contributors on the defense, also profiles as a team with elite talent on the trenches that just needs to be coached up. Unfortunately, what kept going up at an alarming rate on Thursday night was the number of yards and points Central Michigan put up en route to a 44-point, 546-all purpose yard outing.

If you were looking for a scorned Tiger fanbase to show any mercy towards Derek Mason after abruptly leaving when the program needed stability, reality was the long place to be looking.

Check out the Auburn family’s response to Oklahoma State’s performance in Mason’s debut in Stillwater:

It was one game, which may not mean much in the grand scheme of things. With that said, Jeff Schmedding has the perfect opportunity to build good will and shut down a Mercer offense that just hung 63 in its opener.
