The 2022 Auburn football season has gotten off to an exciting start, with the hot topic of conversation being the ongoing quarterback battle between Oregon transfer Robby Ashford and returner TJ Finley.

While Finley was named the official Week One starter, it was expected that Ashford would also be getting some play time to see what he could accomplish in an actual game experience. Between exciting run plays and accurate deep balls, Ashford impressed with his athletic ability during his first game.

Meanwhile, Finley did not have a terrible game, although his two interceptions dominate the conversation when it come to his performance on Saturday. And since this was only the first game, and against an FCS opponent, did Ashford really prove that he is capable of carrying the offense?

The idea of a two-quarterback system has begun to get tossed around, especially with both Finley and Ashford committed to the overall success of the team and John Samuel Shenker’s insistence that there is no controversy when it comes to who the starting quarterback is.

When asked about the Game 2 plan for the quarterbacks as Auburn football prepares to take on San Jose State, head coach Bryan Harsin only had cryptic comments to offer:

It seems the situation is pretty unchanged from how Harsin described it after the first game, that no decisions are being made yet. While Ashford may walk away from Game 1 looking like the dominant quarterback, he still has a lot to prove before the Tigers face much bigger competition as the season goes on.

For now, we can continue to expect to see a mix of both Finley and Ashford on the field, but the keys will ultimately be handed to whoever is putting the team in the best place to succeed.
