Congratulations Auburn football fans. The worst Saturday of the season should hopefully be in the rearview after the Tigers fell to Penn State 41-12, scoring a touchdown in the fourth quarter after going down 31-6 and even missing the extra point for dramatic effect.

What made Saturday so painful on the Plains goes beyond the atrocity that was Penn State-Auburn in the sweltering mid-afternoon sun inside Jordan-Hare Stadium. T.J. Finley and Robby Ashford both threw a pick, while Finley fumbled twice.

Not only did the Tigers’ two-headed monster under center look less mighty than a wingless Tinker Bell, but across the coast, Bo Nix dominated BYU to the tune of 257 all-purpose yards, two passing touchdowns, and three rushing TDs.

Auburn football fans were jealous of where their QB stands in the juxtaposition between Nix and the man who replaced him at the university his father played for:

Auburn football must give Zach Calzada and Holden Geriner a shot

At this point, there’s nothing to lose when it relates to sending out the as-of-yet-used signal-callers sitting behind T.J. Finley and Robby Ashford on the Auburn football depth chart. Zach Calzada, who was thought to be a possible option under center against Penn State, and freshman Holden Geriner, may as well get some reps against Mizzou.

The quarterback role was supposed to be sorted by Week 3, but the Nittany Lions threw any previously established game-plan out the window with their thorough domination of the Tigers’ top two QBs. Now, with Bryan Harsin’s job seemingly on the line, is the time to deploy the other backfield options because, well, there’s no other options.
