Deion Sanders, who has been linked to the Auburn football head coaching job in the increasingly likely event Bryan Harsin is fired this season, is reportedly a top name for the vacant Georgia Tech role per CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd.
The Yellow Jackets opening was created Sunday, September 25 when the university released Geoff Collins from his contract. Per BetMGM, Collins’ seven-year contract guarantees his full salary if he is relieved of his duties as head coach at any point during the first four years of his contract — meaning he’s due a cool $10.5 million for having been fired prior to January 1st 2023.
Along with Collins, Georgia Tech Athletic Director Todd Stansbury was canned as well, meaning a complete program overhaul is due. ‘Prime Time’ would undoubtedly be the impetus for full-scale changes in the ATL.
Here was Dodd’s explanation as to why the top Auburn football coaching target would ‘make too much sense’ for a Yellow Jackets team that had fallen outside the top 50 in this past recruiting cycle according to 247Sports’ rankings:
"“Coach Prime might actually work in a crowded media market where Deion was adored as a member of the Falcons and Braves. After a 4-3 record in his first COVID-19 shortened season with the Tigers, Coach Prime led Jackson State to an 11-2 record (9-0 SWAC) in his second campaign. The Tigers are 4-0 to start 2022 while outscoring opponents 190-37. It makes too much sense.”"
Deion Sanders may have met with AU brass about becoming the next Auburn football coach
It’s flight-tracking season with college football head coaches being canned left and right at this current point in time. With that, one local tweeter reported that Deion Sanders flew to the Plains last Sunday after Penn State pummeled Auburn football 41-12 on September 17.
If that is the case, then Tiger fans could have a generational coaching talent coming to them if ‘Prime Time’ decides that Georgia Tech isn’t a big enough stage for his talents. While Florida State is likely his dream destination, Auburn provides the biggest stage in the sport with Alabama and Georgia as blood rivals.
Since Bryan Harsin is likely a goner the next time AU loses, Sanders will be a name to watch for the Tigers job in the coming months.
