The Auburn football team has played four games so far this season, and unfortunately it seems they are living up to their pre-season hype (or lack thereof). Between fans, analysts, experts, and everyone else, the consensus prior to the season was that Auburn football would be dreadful.

And now we’re living it. Though the Tigers’ record is 3-1, no win has come easily or really made the team look good at all. It almost feels inaccurate to say that Auburn won last weekend, but rather Missouri lost the game (at least twice).

Tonight, the Tigers will welcome the Bayou Bengals to the Plains for a matchup that carries a lot of weight for this Auburn team. Should the home team lose, they may find themselves without a head coach. For Auburn to pull off a strong win this weekend, the wide receiver position group will need to step up.

Auburn football is one of just three programs, joining UAB and South Florida, that has not had a touchdown scored by a receiver so far this year. The Tigers have scored just two touchdowns through the air–one caught by a tight end and one caught by a running back.

However, the potential to find a playmaker in the WR room is there. Ja’Varrius Johnson is the team’s leading receiver with 13 receptions for 231 yards, followed by Shedrick Jackson with 10 catches for 141 yards. Koy Moore found a way to put himself in the #4 spot after his performance last weekend, but the other two players in the Tigers’ top five receivers are John Samuel Shenker and Tank Bigsby.

Auburn football is relying heavily on Robby Ashford now, who is definitely more of a runner than a passer, but the Tigers will have to be able to utilize the pass game more in order to pull off a win tonight.
