Every Auburn football fan understands the uncomfortable inevitability surrounding the Tigers’ head coaching position. Bryan Harsin is essentially a dead man walking and at this point, it’s a matter of ‘when’ and not ‘if’ the Boise native will be dismissed in disgrace.
After blowing a 17-point lead to LSU Week 5 in this season’s less dramatic but somehow more heartbreaking version of the 2021 Mississippi State matchup, Harsin is holding onto the job by a thread. Against Georgia on October 8, that thread could be blown to smithereens.
Given the Tigers’ four-touchdown underdog status against the Bulldogs Between the Hedges this Saturday, there isn’t much intrigue surrounding Auburn football’s Week 6 matchup with the defending champions. There is quite the intriguing collision between Alabama and Texas A&M, though, and it could have ramifications regarding the AU head coaching job.
Things are not going according to plan in College Station this season, with Jimbo Fisher’s Aggies squandering the momentum of last year’s Alabama upset and the subsequent No. 1 2022 recruiting class he landed. According to Paul Finebaum, if things continue to go as poorly as they’ve been, the boosters in East Central Texas could decide to cut the highly expensive cord:
With Auburn football in need of a proven commodity, Nick Saban and Alabama can help reveal a Tigers head coaching candidate against Texas A&M
While the expectations at Texas A&M have not been met, that doesn’t mean Jimbo Fisher can’t coach. In fact, Fisher’s years at Florida State were a masterclass in Power Five dominance, featuring a five-year stretch of New Year’s 6 bowl game appearances from 2012-2016.
A change of scenery, albeit from one booster-controlled program to another, could be what the doctor ordered for Fisher. Auburn football can most certainly use someone with SEC experience, a victory over Nick Saban under his belt, and a proven recruiting pedigree in the most football-rich state in the nation.
Can Alabama help reveal a head coaching candidate for Auburn? An embarrassing defeat to the Crimson Tide for a Texas A&M team that has struggled offensively certainly moves the needle in that direction.
