Fifth Quarter, a credentialed sports blog focusing on college sports, linked quite an intriguing name to the impending Auburn football head coaching search — one set to kick off in earnest when the Auburn Board of Trustees does what they’ve been wanting to do since at least this past February’s inquiry into Bryan Harsin.

That would be Paul Chryst, who was recently dismissed from the University of Wisconsin after a 2-3 start to the season that hit its crescendo during a 34-10 walloping at the hands of former Badgers coach Brett Bielema’s Illinois.

Given the team is 0-3 to Power Five teams this season, with an outclassing at the hands of Ohio State that shows just how far Wisconsin is from the top of the Big Ten at the moment, it wasn’t a shock to see Chryst let go. With that said, it should be noted this would have been his first losing season as Badgers head coach and Chryst did lead Wisconsin to three New Year’s Six bowls during his time in Madison.

Still, losing to Illinois after previously succumbing to Washington State — which is, to be fair, an improved program with Cameron Ward under center this season — makes Chryst’s departure, as previously mentioned, far from a shock.

Fifth Quarter considers Chryst’s potential to be the next Auburn football head coach equally unsurprising:

Auburn football fans not sold on the idea of Paul Chryst

Auburn football fans aren’t into the idea of the recently dismissed Wisconsin head coach Paul Chryst becoming the next Tigers’ locker-room voice. Here were the less than positive responses to that suggestion:

Some fans don’t believe a northern man can’t win in the head coach seat on the Plains, but those responses are far too dense to be shared. Still, Chryst wouldn’t lead an immediate turnaround in the SEC, and quite frankly, names like Deion Sanders and Hugh Freeze would be far more exciting.
