Auburn basketball got back to its spread-covering ways this past Tuesday when they blew out a solid Big South school, Winthrop, at the Neville Arena. The Tigers return to their home floor Friday night as they host Texas Southern for the second time in three years.
Back during the COVID-19-stricken 2020-21 season — one in which AU was ineligible for the postseason due to a self-imposed ban –, these two teams clashed in what was an eventual 17-point win over the Tigers from Houston. Winning 80-63, Auburn basketball was led by Allen Flanigan’s 18 points and Jaylin Williams’ 15 points and six rebounds during a December 15, 2020 matchup with TSU.
Of course, there’s been a ton of turnover from both teams’ 2020-21rosters to now. AU now has a backcourt filled with high-octane scoring options like Wendell Green Jr. and K.D. Johnson, and the orange and blue also feature two-way freshmen like Chance Westry, Tre Donaldson, and Yohan Traore, who should eventually develop into much more potent offensive weapons in time. Texas Southern also features six transfers and Shaquille O’Neal’s son, Shaqir.
On November 18, 2022, the two teams will face off for the fifth time. All four meetings have gone AU’s way, and sportsbooks again expect that to be the case.
