Auburn football: Lane Kiffin denies report of Ole Miss departure
For much of the 2022 season, the talk surrounding Auburn football has been largely about the coaching situation. While Bryan Harsin had support from the fanbase early on, a loss to Penn State and several disheartening losses afterward ultimately led to calls for his dismissal.
Auburn football players and fans alike have rallied around interim head coach Cadillac Williams, reigniting the energy within and surrounding the program, but the burning question on everyone’s minds is this: Who will be the next head coach?
Fan favorites early on were Lane Kiffin and Deion Sanders, but as time went on, Kiffin began trending up while Sanders faded out. Names like Dan Lanning, Hugh Freeze, and even Dabo Swinney have circulated, but Kiffin has remained the top candidate in the eyes of many.
Earlier this evening it was announced by a Mississippi reporter that Kiffin plans to step down from his position at Ole Miss this Friday following the Egg Bowl to take the head coaching position on the Plains. There has been much speculation about when an announcement could be made, if it would happen before or after the Iron Bowl, etc., but this has been the first claim that things are “officially” happening.
The tweet blew up, naturally, and it didn’t take long for known Twitter user Lane Kiffin to stumble upon it. Here’s what the Rebs’ head coach had to say about the news out of The Sip:
Is Kiffin staying at Ole Miss? Is Kiffin coming to Auburn? Rumors have been swirling for weeks, but it’s likely that we won’t get a real answer until after the Rebs have played their last regular-season game. However, big news could be well on the way after Thanksgiving.
