Lane Kiffin may have just tipped off his impending Auburn football move with a tweet paying homage to the upcoming regular season finale for Ole Miss this coming Thursday in the annual Egg Bowl against Mississippi State.

Kiffin shared a photo of the inside cover of a book chronicling the Egg Bowl on his Twitter, perhaps indicating that the interstate rivalry between Mississippi’s two SEC programs could be the ‘storybook ending’ to his time coaching the Rebels.

That’s quite the Easter egg…

Auburn football is the perfect landing spot for Lane Kiffin

We all know that Lane Kiffin will always want more out of his coaching career, which makes him a horrifying coaching candidate in some respects — mainly the what-ifs that will arise if the program isn’t at the top of the standings — and a perfect one in many others. No matter what, next September, with Kiffin possibly (likely?) in tow, the Plains will get a coach who is pouring his absolute all into the program — just as he has done at all of his prior stops.

The thing about his Ole Miss stint is that the success only went so far. Even with a Heisman candidate quarterback Matt Corral (No. 7 in Heisman voting) in 2021, Kiffin couldn’t overcome Nick Saban and Alabama in the SEC West. The Rebels have beaten Alabama once since 2004.

With Auburn football, there’s no guarantee he’d beat the Crimson Tide year in and year out, but he’d at least be at a program that has the resources to compete both on the field and on the recruiting trail with the college football world’s recent historic juggernaut. He’d also become Saban’s de facto biggest rival, making the Iron Bowl the Super Bowl of the South and putting the Kiffin-Saban rivalry at the top of the headlines every November.

Kiffin could gain celebrity as Auburn football head coach, but that’s not likely what he wants. At this point, getting a fanbase that lives and breathes the sport like he does, a brain trust that will give him the resources to succeed in all facets of the profession, and being in a place where there is nothing more sacred on Saturdays could be at the top of his wish list.

If so, come on down to the Plains Mr. Kiffin…
