Auburn basketball looks to run its record to 9-0 when they take on Memphis on Saturday, December 10 at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia for the annual Holiday Hoopsgiving tournament. The other tournament matchups include Loyola Chicago vs. Clemson (Dec. 10), Wake Forest vs. LSU (Dec.10), and Georgia vs. Notre Dame (Dec. 18).
AU last played on December 2 on their home floor when they blew the doors off Colgate, who was pegged by Las Vegas to keep things relatively close — with the spread set at 13 but the actual difference being 27.
Against Colgate, Bruce Pearl was without Jaylin Williams and thus deployed Allen Flanigan and Chris Moore together in the lineup to great success. He also gave Lior Berman 13 minutes of floor time. It’ll be interesting to see if those trends will continue with Williams back in the lineup, having gotten over a bout with COVID following the team’s Thanksgiving Cancun trip.
Needless to say, whatever worked against Colgate likely won’t be transferrable to Penny Hardaway’s Tigers. Thus far, Memphis is 2-0 against the SEC in 2022-23, beating Vanderbilt and Ole Miss. Can they run their record against the Southeastern Conference to a perfect 3-0? Or will AU’s hoops dominance continue in the ATL? Memphis vs. Auburn Prediction
Auburn is most certainly running into their toughest opponent of the season against Memphis, hence the near-even odds. This is a true test to see if AU is worthy of a top 10 ranking during the early portion of the 2022-23 season.
With a more experienced Memphis lineup, this could be an insurmountable challenge in the ATL. It’ll be high-scoring affair.
Prediction: 139.5o (-115)
