Late Kick host Josh Pate believes that Auburn football adding Coastal Carolina quarterback Grayson McCall, a reigning 3x Sun Belt Player of the Year, would make the Tigers ‘several games better before they ever do anything else.’

McCall will be visiting new Auburn football head coach Hugh Freeze and offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery this coming weekend on both Saturday and Sunday as he aims to make a jump from the Group of Five. North Carolina State quarterback Devin Leary will also be on the Plains as the Wolfpack signal-caller looks for a new Power Five home.

Auburn football quarterback room expected to look drastically different in 2023

With a new head coach comes new cornerstones in college football, and the Auburn football transition from Bryan Harsin to Hugh Freeze will be no different — especially given the post-COVID player-friendly transfer rules.

Harsin brought T.J. Finley in year one and then added Robby Ashford and Zach Calzada during the last transfer cycle, but it appears that at least two of the aforementioned arms will be in a new offense in 2023. Calzada has already hit the transfer portal and Finley is expected to join his brother at Southeastern Louisiana.

Ashford is very likely to stay at AU, but Freeze is clearly looking for a more established arm to run his first-year offense to facilitate a faster turnaround. That leaves an opening at the top of the QB room depth chart for one of the top transfer portal QB names to lead the next era of Auburn football.
