Auburn football misses on another QB target. Who is next?
The Auburn football program has been riding the high of the successful recruiting that came along with the hire of new head coach Hugh Freeze, but the Tigers aren’t finished yet. With the transfer portal window still open and many uncommitted prospects still left on the board, there is much work left to do.
One position that seems to be hanging in limbo right now is the quarterback position. Zach Calzada has officially entered the transfer portal after seeing no game action on the Plains, and TJ Finley is expected to transfer following his spring graduation.
The Tigers will return redshirt freshman Holden Geriner and redshirt sophomore Robby Ashford, as well as bring in class of 2023 signee Hank Brown, but it has already been confirmed that the coaching staff is shopping the portal for the right fit at QB.
Both Devin Leary and Grayson McCall were considered to be priority targets shortly after their entries to the transfer portal, but Leary has since committed to Kentucky and McCall canceled his visit with Auburn football, reportedly due to academic issues.
Now, the next-highest-ranked quarterback in the portal has made his move to another program official. Former Texas quarterback Hudson Card will play for the Purdue Boilermakers in 2023, and the Tigers will return to square one. At this point, who could be considered?
Speaking of Purdue, a possible target for the Tigers could end up being Brady Allen, who just announced his intentions to transfer. A 4-star QB out of high school, Allen spent one year at Purdue and would have four years of eligibility at his next stop.
Earlier today, former Wake Forest QB Sam Hartman entered the portal, but according to Pete Thamel he is likely to end up at Notre Dame.
Still, it’s not over until it’s over, and although he has only one year of eligibility, there will be plenty of programs that take an interest in the former Demon Deacon.
