Ever since Hugh Freeze and Philip Montgomery began donning the orange and blue, Auburn football has been looking like a future destination for great high school quarterbacks. Both are well-known for their development at the position.
Freeze has coached Bo Wallace, Chad Kelly, and Malik Willis to great seasons at Ole Miss and Liberty, and Montgomery has coached Kevin Kolb, Robert Griffin III, Nick Florence, Bryce Petty, and Dane Evans to record breaking seasons at Houston, Baylor, and Tulsa.
With these two in tow, recruiting at the position has been closely watched this off-season as the transfer portal and the high school ranks alike have several great players. Namely, players like Grayson McCall, Devin Leary, and recently Spencer Sanders have all had their names linked to the Tigers.
One big name high school quarterback has come out and said that he likes what he sees from the new Tigers coaching staff. Arkansas 4-star quarterback Walker White spoke with Auburn Live at On3 to discuss his thoughts on the staff.
White said that he hopes to visit by March, if not earlier, and that it is in part due to his previous relationship with Philip Montgomery. White was previously offered at Tulsa by Montgomery, before being offered by Montgomery at Auburn.
While White has not had the chance to meet Freeze, he said that he looks forward to doing so. He also listed Arkansas, Baylor, and Clemson as schools he would be visiting soon.
Walker White’s game would be a great fit for Auburn football
This kid can absolutely play. There’s no other way to put it. He can absolutely sling it. At six-foot-three and 225 pounds, he is sturdy enough to stand in and rip throws down the field, but looks like and incredibly mobile QB who can make plays with his legs.
Traditionally, both Montgomery and Freeze have preferred dual-threat QBs who can at least extend plays. It looks like White can do much more than that.
As for his fit in what I expect to be a Montgomery veer-and-shoot attack, the deep ball looks very good out of his hand. He already plays in a three and four-wide receiver spread offense, so there should be some comfort in the tempo based spread attack that Montgomery and Freeze will be implementing.
This recruitment bears some attention as it goes into next season. Freeze and Montgomery winning a 4-star out of state QB in year one could do huge numbers for the class.
