After openly pondering the idea that Trent Dilfer could be a better quarterbacks coach for UAB than Hugh Freeze will be for Auburn football, AL.com’s Joseph Goodman is now wondering if a more apt comparison for Dilfer will end up being former Tigers coach Bryan Harsin.

Harsin, known for talking a big game but failing to deliver on the recruiting trail and in key moments in the middle eight and the end of games on the gridiron, was fired on October 31 after fans revolted for months about him sticking around.

Goodman’s premise revolved around the fact that Dilfer is talking a mighty big game since arriving in Birmingham — going as far as saying that UAB will be the No. 2 option in the state for recruits behind Nick Saban and Alabama. Here was Goodman’s worry regarding Dilfer’s big talk ahead of his Yellowhammer State coaching debut:

"“…maybe (Dilfer’s) just Harsin UAB, someone who says things like, “Just wait,” as he barrels the car down the dirt road towards a cliff. I’m hopeful that Dilfer is the guy who can take UAB to the next level as a football school, but some of his pronouncements are triggering PTSD.”"

UAB will never be Auburn football

The Plains is built for football, and in the Bruce Pearl era, basketball. And gymnastics. And baseball. Auburn is a college town that derives its passion and energy from what the Tigers — both the AU Tigers and the Auburn High School Tigers — gets done on the field year in and year out.

Birmingham is the most noteworthy metro in the state of Alabama that is focused on business, nightlife, and represents split territory between the Tigers and the Crimson Tide.

While Trent Dilfer has grand plans to make UAB a powerhouse in the state, the truth is that it just isn’t built to be, much in the same way Atlanta’s Georgia Tech will never make inroads to surpassing Georgia ever again in the Peach State.

It’d be fun to have a third powerhouse enter the mix in Alabama, but the two Iron Bowl rivals will never leave room for a third program to enter the mix. Sorry, UAB, South Alabama, and Troy.
