Auburn football: Transfer RB Dillon Johnson on commitment watch
The Auburn football team made leaps and bounds in recruiting in the weeks leading up to the early signing period. In addition to forming his first coaching staff on the Plains, head coach Hugh Freeze and assistant coaches worked hard for a Top 20 class on early signing day.
However, just because early signing day has come and gone does not mean that recruiting is over. There are still plenty of unsigned high school prospects, as well as constant action in the transfer portal with bowl games coming to an end.
One of the Tigers’ top transfer targets is former Mississippi State bulldog Dillon Johnson. The junior out of Greenville, MS, played in Starkville for three seasons, racking up 1,198 yards and 11 touchdowns on 229 carries. In 2022, Johnson recorded 89 carries for 488 yards and three touchdowns.
Johnson entered the transfer portal in early December and quickly made his way onto Auburn football’s radar. With Tank Bigsby heading to the NFL, the Tigers will return Jarquez Hunter and will need an experienced back to pair with him while Damari Alston and incoming freshman Jeremiah Cobb gain more coaching and experience.
The running back visited the Plains on the weekend of December 17, per Auburn Live, and got the chance to meet with Hugh Freeze and spend time with running backs and assistant head coach Cadillac Williams:
"“It went great,” Johnson said. “I got to meet Coach (Hugh) Freeze for the first time, got to hang out with Cadillac (Williams). He’s my dawg. We’ve built a really good bond here. We’ve got some things going on and stuff like that. it was fun, man. There’s nothing like it. Had an awesome facility which was the best I’ve seen on any visit I’ve been on.”"
Johnson plans to announce his decision today, and he will choose between Auburn football, Washington, and a return to Mississippi State.
