2 outbound Auburn football transfer portal quarterbacks have found new homes on Tuesday, January 10 — that being assumed starter but ultimately snap-less Texas A&M transfer Zach Calzada, who will be going back to Texas to join the Incarnate Word Cardinals, and fellow scholarship QB Trey Lindsey, who served as a backup for four years on the Plains and now heads to the UAlbany Great Danes.

Calzada came to AU in January 2022 after starting for Texas A&M in 2021 following an injury to Haynes King. He even beat the Tigers at Kyle Field on November 6, 2021. Unfortunately, an injury kept him out of the 2022 season altogether before he took to the transfer portal a second time in as many years. Calzada also reportedly had an interest in Buffalo. That would’ve formed a pipeline with the SUNY system in New York, but alas Calzada is going back to the Lone Star State instead.

As for Lindsey, he was on the field for an Auburn football home finale victory against Western Kentucky after the game was decided. The Montgomery-born Lindsey will be a strong competitor for the Great Danes, who went just 3-8 in 2022.

Auburn football still looking for another transfer portal quarterback

There’s been plenty of talk about whether Robby Ashford will be the starter in 2023 for Auburn football. Hugh Freeze flipped Hank Brown from Liberty, where he had previously reeled in Brown as Flames head coach, and is looking at Oklahoma State QB Spencer Sanders and Virginia QB Brennan Armstrong.

If either of the two aforementioned transfer QBs commits to AU, it’s highly likely Ashford would be a backup. If the QB room were to add a lesser name, Ashford certainly improved enough to warrant handing the ball to once more — if he meshes well in Freeze’s schemes, of course.

The next shoe to drop could be an incoming arm, so brace yourselves Tiger fans. Once that happens, difficult decisions are set to follow.
