Auburn football: Transfer OL Micah Mazzccua on commitment watch
So far, the Auburn football program has added 10 transfers to the recruiting class of 2023: offensive linemen Dillon Wade, Avery Jones, and Gunner Britton, defensive linemen Mosiah Nasili-Kite and Lawrence Johnson, edge Elijah McAllister, linebacker DeMario Tolan, tight end Rivaldo Fairweather, running back Brian Battie, and wide receiver Nick Mardner.
Head coach Hugh Freeze made it clear early on that the transfer portal would be a big priority in his first year on the Plains, and he and his coaching staff are working overtime to fill all the gaps on the Tigers’ roster ahead of the 2023 season.
So where does Auburn football’s next transfer commitment come from? Tonight, former Baylor offensive lineman Micah Mazzccua will make his final decision, choosing between Nebraska, Auburn, and Florida. The two-year Baylor starter visited the Plains last Wednesday, and followed up the trip with visits to both Nebraska and Florida.
Pro Football Focus gave Mazzccua a run-block grade of 78.5, the ninth highest ranking among guards in college football. With two years of eligibility left, the offensive lineman will be a big get for whichever program lands him.
According to 247 Sports’ Mike Schaefer, Nebraska may have a slight edge over Florida and Auburn due to the connections with Baylor:
"Nebraska makes a lot of sense for Mazzccua with his connections to Baylor, where Matt Rhule and members of the staff used to be, before leaving prior to the offensive lineman’s arrival in 2020. Mazzccua is also from Philadelphia — though he attended high school in Baltimore — and Nebraska’s connections in the city are strong, which helped pull in former A&M defender Elijah Jeudy."
Though the Tigers already have three offensive line transfers and five signees, they’ll be looking to take several more from the portal and load up in the trenches after a few years of lax OL recruitment.
