Auburn football Senior Bowl news: Hugh Freeze to attend, SB wanted Bo Nix
Auburn football will be represented at the Senior Bowl with EDGE rushers Derrick Hall and Eku Leota — CB Nehemiah Pritchett pulled out of the game due to his return to AU in 2023 — but the Tigers will also have the presence of head coach Hugh Freeze at the Reese’s Senior Bowl in Mobile on February 4.
Freeze will be joined by fellow SEC head coaches Shane Beamer (South Carolina), Josh Heupel (Tennessee), and Eli Drinkwitz (Missouri) as well as fellow first-year in-state head coach Trent Dilfer (UAB).
Saturday’s annual Senior Bowl will be the 74th in its existence. The game continued through the COVID-19 pandemic in February 2021 — the game lucked out missing out on the beginning of the COVID lockdowns in March 2020 by a month.
Former Auburn football quarterback Bo Nix was wanted at the Senior Bowl
There won’t be any headline-name quarterbacks for this year’s iteration of the Senior Bowl. Max Duggan from TCU was certainly one heading into the College Football Playoff championship but the 65-7 loss to Georgia lost him some luster.
Senior Bowl Executive Director Jim Nagy admitted that the game was looking forward to having former Auburn football QB Bo Nix, but that didn’t happen due to his return to Oregon for a fifth collegiate season and second in Eugene (h/t Auburn Daily):
"“We’re not going to have a first-round quarterback, I think for the first time in seven years. There are some day two guys that went back to school. Bo Nix is a guy that we would have loved to have in the game. He went back to Oregon.”"
Duggan will be joined by Jake Haener from Fresno State, BYU’s Jaren Hall, Houston’s Clayton Tune, and Tyson Bagent from Division II Shepherd at quarterback. Nix will be busy preparing for the Ducks’ spring game in April.
